The good thing about
having a rare name like Comben is that, in theory, it makes it a lot easier to
trace the genealogy. Although quite a simple looking name, it is unbelievable
how many people cannot pronounce it correctly. As a matter of course, I always
have to spell it out slowly for people as soon as I've said it to combat the
returned blank look or awkward pause. Regular mispronunciations are; Comm~den,
Coom~ben, Coom~men, Cob~den, and Con~ben.
I love it when
people (usually sitting at trestle tables in shopping centres) stop you and try
to sell you a potted history of your family name. I've never had anyone
find Comben in their database.
Hopefully, I will be
able to piece together the rest of the history of my name and find out where in
the world all the Combens have ended-up.
